David Avila Assistant Chief Pilot

David Avila, Global Air Charters Assistant Chief Pilot, has a passion for upholding high safety standards and customer service and going to Costa Rica. Read on to learn more about David Avila.

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Costa Rica and raised in Los Angeles, California.

What education and certifications do you hold?

I have a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. I also hold an Airline Transport Pilot license and a CFI.

What makes GAC stand apart from other private charters?

Everyone maintains professionalism, from sales, flight crew, and upper management. Safety is our top priority, and not making a buck, as opposed to some operators.

What is your favorite thing about working for GAC?

Personally, it’s the family feel. Coming out on rotation does not feel like coming to work.

What motivates you to do the best on the job?

Lately, I’ve had the opportunity to fly with new first officers. I enjoy teaching and sharing my experiences to add to their toolbox. As a pilot, mentoring the new captains motivates me.

What specific moment made you realize why you do what you do?

Transporting NASA astronauts to training and then taking them to the launch made me feel we played a significant role in the mission. I was delighted to watch the launch.

In your opinion, what makes a good pilot?

A pilot must be transparent and able to take constructive criticism.

What do you enjoy most about your position?

I enjoy that I can count on management being on my side when I have to make decisions as captain.

What was the most fun you’ve had on the job?

I got to fly the SpaceX Crew-2 last year. The astronauts requested a low approach over the rocket launch pad.

What is your favorite plane to fly?

I’ve come to enjoy flying N171JC. We have a new paint job and a new interior. It’s always nice to pull into an FBO and have your name be known.

What memory will you never forget while flying with GAC?

I had the opportunity to fly NASA astronauts, and at their request, I performed a low approach around their rocket. It was a unique experience that I may not have gotten anywhere else.

What do you like to do when you aren’t flying?

I enjoy lounging and working on house projects.

What is your favorite travel destination? Why?

I enjoy flying into Costa Rica for sure. My father used to take me to the airport to see airplanes take off and land. Being born in a third-world country and being able to fly in on a jet into the place where the dream began as a child is emotional, and I enjoy it every single time.
